Work statement: The intention of ARTeach is to create a piece that is approachable and encourages public participation. Our vision is an artwork that can be understood by everyone and has concrete meaning to our community. We feel the "family tree" concept is extremely appropriate for the times we are in. It communicates that, while we are all individuals, together we make up this collective family we call Grand Rapids. The act of signing ones' name to the ribbon and attaching it to the tree is a validation that says "I am here; I am part of this." And as the names keep adding up, and when it all comes together, we will have a piece that the community has participated in; and it will be understood that we are one Grand Rapids family. And, considering the times we are in, that is a very powerful understanding. |
