Artist bio: I grew up in the upper peninsula of Michigan before attending the University of Michigan. There I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Art and Design in the first trial of their new program for a BFA degree. I managed to get through all the stumbles and pitfalls of a new system to accomplish a thesis at the end of my four years that I was very proud of. During my junior year I studied abroad in Ireland, which inspired me to continue traveling. After my graduation I spent the following year teaching English in France and learning French. After, I found a job as studio manager and head teacher of KidsArt in California, while also working as a medical illustrator independently. After which, my boyfriend joined me from France and we traveled through the deserts and west coast of the US hiking, sight seeing, and finding new inspirations. Now I find myself in a moment of transition once again, looking for a way to continue a life in the art world.
Artist statement: The artworks I've created are all prone to a realistic style due to my tendency to absorb myself in detail. From medical illustration, to landscape and portraiture, I bring the same dedication to deriving information from my subject and reconstructing it. In a way, it is a want to understand the subject matter completely, and in turn, allowing others to understand it also. It's a way to put an amalgamation of information into a concise plan of visual ideas.
About the work:
Title: Simon

Art form: 2-D, 3-D

Medium: Acrylic paint on metal

Year created: 2006

Description of work: 5 and 1/2 feet by 5 feet by 16 inches. It is a portrait that is meant to be hung on the wall and to be seen as an average painting from your first glance when viewed from the front. As you walk to the side of the painting you begin to see that this "whole" portrait is in fact 92 pieces that each stand separately away from the wall at different distances. The topmost left corner being only one inch away from the wall. As your eye moves diagonally to the bottom right corner each piece comes out one inch more, ending with the farthest piece being 16 inches away from the wall. The whole piece is constructed on a metal framework, which itself is broken into 16 separate pieces so that the weight of the piece is not difficult to support.

Work statement: A play between 2D and 3D art as well as between construction and destruction of image. The 92 pieces that come together only when the viewer's mind perceives them to be parts of a whole image, are also in reality never physically touching each other. Upon closer examination and walking from one side to the other, this falling apart of image becomes more clear, and individuality of the pieces become more prominent, than when directly in front of the work and a whole portrait is seen.
