Sonjie Feliciano Solomon
Artist bio: Solomon uses industrial design principles and tools to manipulate and map points in space and plan the work. She then employs repetitive hand construction and finishing to complete each piece. Combining the worlds of design and craft, her work juxtaposes the calculated design process and the organic, ephemeral result.
The sculptural textile pieces are an exercise in balancing aesthetics and functionality. Here, sheer fabric is pieced together to create 3-dimensional quilts of soft, rolling landscapes. Composed only of fabric and thread, the structure comes from the sewn seams, and the pieces are collapsible for storage or Flexible and scalable in size, there is the potential to quickly change an environment and fill a whole space in minutes. In her mirror pieces, series of curved transparent lines are mounted on mirrored backgrounds and come together to form delicate, gossamer volumes. Reflection of the surrounding environment creates an illusion of shapes floating in air.
Artist statement: What interests me most is exploring the potential of a material and pushing its physical limits while
striking a balance between aesthetics and functionality. In this work, sheer fabric is pieced together in a 3-dimensional quilt to create large, collapsible landscapes. Totally flexible and scalable in size, I would love the opportunity to completely fill a room with this work and transform a space into an extraterrestrial or dream-like landscape. The pieces can be hung from the ceiling or walls as well as placed on the floor to create a fully enveloping environment.
My intention is for the work to speak to people first based purely on visual perception and then onto a curiosity about deconstructing the process. Ephemerality and transformation, light and shadow,
structure and collapsibility, the designed and the organic are all qualities that I would like to incorporate into this work to surprise and delight the viewer.
