Artist statement: Many diverse thoughts surface as I'm working and instead of ignoring them I write them down.
My work focuses on the discourse that takes place between me and the work at hand. I’m fascinated by the way the work talks to one another when viewed as a grouping and how it communicates, as the dialogue expands, to suggest a panoramic view of human interactions. I explore notions of the private and public; the high and low; what is considered acceptable or inappropriate; exposing the fleeting thoughts that seemingly pop into my (our) head(s) that are often overlooked or dismissed, suppressed or denied; it’s an obsessive accumulation of the commonplace, momentary and extremely intimate experiences inherent to human relationships. I’m intrigued by the combination of sight and sound as it directly engages the viewer and immerses us all into a more interactive multi-sensory experience whereby the viewer and me can then further our dialogue.
About the work:
Title: sometimes I wonder...

Art form: 2-D, 3-D, Sound

Medium: installation

Year created: 2009

Description of work: The installation primarily consists of 1002, 11"x14", charcoal text drawings and a CD recording of my reading each drawn statement. My voice on the CD has been digitally modified with an echo and delay throughout the hour and thirteen minute playtime and then repeats continuously. Other items include a boombox,a Lazy-Boy Chair (which viewers may sit in), charcoal pencils, erasers, a letter template and notes for the individual drawings. As shown the work is installed in a 900 square foot gallery with 16 foot tall walls. The installation of the drawings is adaptable to numerous spaces and configurations. I have prepared a digital script of all 1002 statements, which could be displayed on one or multiple monitors, or even an outdoor display screen.

Work statement: The drawn statements in this installation include psychological, sociological, sexual, scatological, religious, philosophical, political and cultural references. More specifically, the drawings communicate anger, frustration, anxiety, discontentment and skepticism, ambivalence, delusions, absurdity and a measure of humor. I want to include the whole shit pile: the profane and the irreverent, all the distracted, inconsequential, contradictory, complex and incredible human mess. The installation stretches notions of the private and public; the high and low; what is considered acceptable or inappropriate; it exposes the fleeting thoughts that seemingly pop into my (our) head(s) that occur ever so slightly below the surface; often overlooked or unacknowledged, dismissed, suppressed or denied; it is an obsessive accumulation – there are 1002 drawings - of the commonplace, everyday momentary and extremely intimate experiences inherent to human relationships.
