Artist Gurmej Singh
Artist bio: Artist Singh is a local Southwest Michigan artist characterized as “The World’s Best Parallel Processing Stunt Painter”. He is known for the boldly colored paintings he creates while performing a plethora of stunts; from standing atop a driver-less, moving car to being suspended, inverted, from a crane. In 1999, he broke the world record for longest painting with a 1000 meter painting (over 3280 feet) in Dubai U.A.E. After moving to the United States from Dubai, Singh graduated from Emporia State University in Kansas and in 2001, the Emporia Veterans Bridge was closed for two days to exhibit his paintings. Throughout his career Singh has created and utilized many painting techniques including “Centrism”, “No-Touch”, “Letterism” and “Flowism”.
Artist statement: I incorporate stunts into my paintings to represent the struggle that is necessary for progress and development to exist in culture and science. I have worked under a number of conditions that test my physical and mental endurance; from balancing on a 60-foot pole or bicycling backwards for days at a time, to levitation or jumping from an airplane.

The “I, Too, Have a Dream” project encourages peace, freedom, and nonviolence in day-to-day life. The painting is meant to encourage brotherhood and the peace that is necessary in the world. The depiction of the inspirational figures that have inspired me as I work towards fulfillment of my own dream are intended to serve as a message for peace as well as an inspiration for others to fulfill their own dreams.
About the work:
Title: "I, Too, Have a Dream"

Art form: 2-D, 3-D

Medium: Mixed

Year created: Work not created yet

Description of work: “I, Too, Have a Dream” will be a 65 foot easel holding a 12’x16’ painting comprised of 84 panels. The individual sections of the painting will be titled with one of 84 inspirational quotes from prominent figures in business, politics, entertainment, and social movements. Using the letters from these quotes to construct the content, Singh will embed an image in each of the panels. This style of using letters from a saying or quote is called “Singh Letterism”.

The painting is divided into 84 panels representing the Hindu belief that humans must pass through 84,000 life forms before reaching final enlightenment. An image representing the stunt performed while painting that specific panel or significant inspirational actions will be depicted within each small canvas, however, the viewer’s eye will be drawn to the superimposed images of Ghandi, Mother Theresa, and Martin Luther King Jr.

Work statement: On September 23rd, Artist Singh plans that a helicopter will drop him atop the 65 foot easel. He will stay on the easel for 14 days as part of the project. On October 6th Artist Singh will jump from the 65 foot easel to symbolize- he was part of the project, he was part of the dream, and now that he has accomplished his dream successfully he will detach himself with a winner's spirit to move on to see another dream.
