Jessica Moon Bernstein
Artist bio: Jessica Moon Bernstein was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1968 and now lives in Boulder, Colorado. Her multicultural roots are grounded in a rich mixture of Hispanic, Arab, and European ancestry.

After studying fine art and international relations at the University of Colorado, she served with the Peace Corps in Mongolia. She continues to visit Mongolia and other countries around the globe for various work projects.

She completed her Master’s Degree and teaches art at various local schools and museums. She does most of her work in her Boulder studio.

She completed an art residency at Anderson Ranch Art Center. During her residency she fused her experiences traveling and working abroad into her art. Jessica investigates the relationship, or the conflict, between discarded materials and the environment. She has shown her work at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Art League of Houston, Ohio Craft Museum, and the Dairy Center for the Arts.
Artist statement: By re-evaluating what our society thinks of as trash, I use mass produced, discarded materials as the foundation for my work. The results oftentimes reference a return to natural forms as the artwork becomes a reinvention of the machine-made into a unique object.

My work is a response to the effect of globalization on the natural environment and ethnic cultures. During my travels around the world and time living in Mongolia I noticed the relationship, or the conflict, between nature and culture. I use discarded inner tubes, tires, and plastic bags to create both humorous and thought provoking artwork. My work investigates how waste is transforming and creating new landscapes thus becoming more and more integrated into nature.

I find inspiration in the plethora of mundane materials we discard, re-composing what in nature may never decompose.
