Douglas Gruizenga
Artist bio: I grew up in Portage, Michigan with a goal to become an automotive engineer. After the first semester at Western Michigan University, I transferred to the Art Department where I earned a BA in art education and an MA in sculpture and furniture design. That was 1972. To earn a living I worked as a psychiatric social worker for 20 years. Building sculpture, homes, cars, and sailboats in my spare time. In 2003 I began to focus, again,on sculpture. In 2005, I moved to Interlochen. The inspiration afforded me by the students there keeps my creative juices flowing.
This year I am fortunate to have sculptures exhibited at Appalachian State University, Knoxville, Indianapolis, Mount Union College, The University of Toledo, The Ford Center For The Performing Arts, Canton Mi. Jackson, Mi. Traverse City, Mi. Brighton, Mi. Kalamazoo, Mi. South Bend In. Interlochen, Mi. Suttons Bay, Mi. Glen Arbor, Mi. and Arcadia, Mi.

Artist statement: Generally my sculptures represent man made forms of a utilitarian nature, that are present in our everyday life.
This particular piece was a result of a sculpture proposal for St. Georges Cathedral in Perth, Australia. I have chosen to replace the violent content of the origional story with an interpretation that would demonstrate the benefits of approaching our fears in a more affiliative and constructive fashion.
