Artist bio: I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI. I am 41 years old and the youngest of 7. I love traveling, meeting new people, experiencing new cultures, cooking and fine wines. I speak Spanish pretty well but still have much to learn. Being creative is an exciting process for me and I am always happy when people like my work. For the past 12 years I have been doing massage therapy. It is great to see people benefit from the work I do for them. I am engaged and have been with her for 7 years. Her name is Jill and she is the love of my life. Together we plan to see the world. I am very blessed to have found her and my life is all the better for it. She is also very creative and very often helps to inspire me.
Artist statement: I have always loved color. I seem to be drawn to it both in nature as well as in the art world. Glass has also always fascinated me, so working with glass and color is a wonderful synergy. I enjoy the creative process and love learning. I continue to do so every day. I hope through my work to bring joy and some light to people's lives as it does to mine. I have worked with stained glass first, and then got into fusing just for some fun. Since that first class, I have purchased a kiln and spent many hours and dollars on fusing supplies and various projects. I make jewelry, plates, coasters, backsplash tiles, wine stoppers and now my glass masks. These are some of my favorite creations and that is why I am submitting them into the competition.
About the work:
Title: Expressions Illuminated

Art form: 3-D

Medium: Glass and Light

Year created: 2009

Description of work: This work contains several glass masks that I have mounted and then illuminated with changing light. There will be 3 tubes with 3 masks suspended in each tube. The light has a remote control to allow the user to control the shade and rate of change of the lighting. This allows the piece to be interactive and always different based on how the lights are set to change or stay one color. The configuration of the masks may change slightly, but the lighting and suspension in the tubes is all set.

Work statement: In the pictures you can see 2 of the masks that I will be displaying. There will be 9 total, but this allows you to get an idea of their look. I will be posting a video soon to show how they look when the light transitions through them.
