Project Propagate, Sally England & Nick Stockton
Artist bio: Driven by her insatiable passion for innovation along with a good sense of humor, Sally England is an independent artist and designer who has created a diverse body of functional work, including a whimsical line of soft goods, colorful interiors, fashions, and mixed media artwork. England is an active member of the Grand Rapids, Michigan artist community, and has a Bachelors Degree in Communication Arts from Grand Valley State University, in Allendale Michigan.
Artist statement: Too often we navigate through life and perform everyday, mundane, methodical routines without acknowledging all of the small objects that we utilize and observe in the diverse environments that surround us. Too often they slip into the background without recognition, celebration, suspended animation, or praise. You may see them, but do you really see them?
I work to uncover relationships with inanimate objects, and the impact those relationships can have on our understanding of the world, and the significance of every being.

About the work:
Title: Project Propagate

Art form: 3-D

Medium: Installation

Year created: 2009

Description of work: Large-scale outdoor installation on the long-vacant 2 East Fulton building in downtown Grand Rapids.

Work statement: Project Propagate is a regenerative installation created through the use of thousands of recycled and donated artificial flowers. Ninety-nine percent of the flowers were scavenged from a local memorial gardens maintenance pile. We have given the flowers a second life, and utilized them to bring back the life that once existed at the 2 East Fulton building. Project Propagate is a symbol of our hope that Grand Rapids will continue to thrive as a vibrant urban paradise.

We encourage you to look around the city and see the potential for rejuvenation that surrounds you, even in the most unexpected and familiar places.

The 2 East Fulton building was constructed in 1945 for Davenport College and was originally slated to be a six-story tall structure. The Art-Deco style building was later used for many years as the headquarters for Junior Achievement, an educational non-profit. Once a thriving center of learning and development, it now stands dormant with over a decade of vacancy.
