And West Michigan Honda Dealers have again partnered with Kendall College of Art and Design (KCAD) to bring you the Paint My Ride Student Showcase. Witness talented students painting live on Honda vehicles during the opening weekend near Rosa Parks Circle. Then, during WOOD-TV’s eightWest, each finalist will receive $1,500 in compensation for their artistry. Don't miss this incredible display.

Consumers Energy's SmartArt competition blends art with sustainability and environmental stewardship. The competition exemplifies the kind of creativity Consumers Energy and Michigan will need to deliver on our state's clean energy transformation. 

For the eleventh consecutive year, Grand Rapids Public Schools’ high school students created artwork embodying the themes of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainability.

One of only two completed prototypes, Z-Car I is Hadid’s idea for a car tailored to meet the needs of urban life. The vehicle is an aerodynamic, streamlined version of a three-wheeled car, with a two-seat passenger pod that moves up and down based on the  car’s speed for efficient driving. Engineered to be powered by hydrogen fuel cells or electric motors, the car would be emission free. Although never mass­ produced, the car reflects Hadid’s way of thinking about experience, and her way of seeing the world.

Immerse yourself in fantasy as you dive into our Dungeon and seek rewards in the form of art. Our ArtPrize experience begins above in our mead hall where you can breathe in the floral artwork and tavern vibes. But should you choose to continue, you'll enter our basement "Dungeon" to feast your eyes on the treasure trove of art we have in the dark. And remember, every adventure is better with a glass of mead in hand. 

ArtPrize begins September 13th and ends September 28th. The Dungeon Dive is accessible during all hours of operation.

Froggy dazzles the crowd with the manipulation of spray-paint live in front of you. Paintings are done in 5 minutes or less. This is Froggy's third year of her apprenticeship with Studio 6D6 under the instruction of Cosmo Joe. Watch as she continues to grow and color the world one painting at a time.

In celebration of ArtPrize 2024, the Grand Rapids Art Museum has installed a selection of works throughout the Level 3 galleries by ArtPrize artists represented in the permanent collection. These include 2010 Grand Prize Winner Chris LaPorte and 2012 Grand Prize Winner Adonna Khare, as well as artists Andrea Kowch, Gisela Colon, and Salvador Jiménez-Flores, and more. Explore GRAM's collection and find works with the ArtPrize label throughout the galleries.

The Priceless Gallery features a collection of entries curated by the ArtPrize Exhibitions Team. This exhibition explores the human experience through contemporary art and design. The ways in which we understand the world around us are priceless. How we contextualize our lived experiences is priceless. How we learn about ourselves and each other is priceless. How we grow and change is priceless. Art is a priceless expression of the enduring human experience. Even ArtPrize itself is… priceless. 

This gallery space will also play host to numerous activations and events throughout the sixteen days of ArtPrize.


Priceless Gallery Opens

Be a part of a revolutionary digital art exhibit while also contributing to the greater good. This collaborative initiative invites anyone to participate by uploading a photo of their own face, where it will then become part of a large-scale digital mosaic displayed at the Amway Grand Plaza, rendered as part of the painting “Plastic Hills for the Plastic Arts” by ArtPrize Executive Director, Catlin Whitington. Most importantly, the $10 participation fee will support artist grants and those who are grappling with the financial burden of cancer treatment.

Face It Together: An ArtPrize Exhibit

Time-based Performance: 

I will be asking people to look within themselves and identify their flaws. As we all know no one is perfect and it is easy to point out other people’s downfalls. We as a society blame everyone constantly for what they have done wrong and yet we rarely take the time to stop and look within and try to improve ourselves. I would like for people to identify their “deadliest sin” and then see just how many people are the same. To see who has the “deadliest sin” and that it’s okay to let things show so that we can help one another grow and be better. Instead of letting shame, anger or pain divide us let it reunite us.

Sin knows no color,race,religion,age,sex…..

We will never be without it so why not use it to make us better.

I will be making a snake that will grow with each “sin” that is chosen by the public. It will weave in and out of each depiction of the seven deadly sins The project will not be “complete” until the last possible moment of art prize.

My father passed away recently and he struggled with his sins and let peoples view and judgement define him. He finally let it all go five months prior to his death. It was the best five months that we had together.

Similar to slacklining, artist will balance, walk, and surf on a slackchain suspended between trees. On Saturday, September 14, Dreyson will attempt setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest duration balancing on a slackchain (current record is 2:01:11). He will also be present during sunsets throughout ArtPrize to perform, interact, and create video content for @SlackchainDrey. PLEASE NOTE, CHAIN USE IS RESTRICTED TO THE ARTIST ONLY.

Chain Reaction

The ArtPrize Opening Celebration will begin with three separate parades that will converge at the Pearl Street Bridge. Any and all members of the public are encouraged to participate, strolling amid a festive atmosphere through the downtown streets. 
Adding to the festivities and leading each parade will be a band: The Nuru Dance Troupe, El Son De México Mariachi Band, and the Grand Rapids Firefighters Pipes and Drums. 

Interested participants should gather at 6:30 p.m. at one of the three starting locations: 
• Fish Ladder Park (606 Front Ave NW)
• 555 Monroe NW
• ArtPrize ClubHouse (61 Commerce Ave. SW)

Each parade will commence at 7:00 and arrive at the Opening Celebration at approximately 7:30. This series of parades is something ArtPrize hopes will mark the start of a new annual tradition.

Our VIP guests will be treated to an open bar and free food, as well as live performances from our parade-leading bands. And as the sky darkens, you’ll have a front-row seat for the fireworks and the night’s big surprise spectacle.

An event as huge as ArtPrize deserves a huge, multi-sensory party to start things off. The three KickOff Parades will arrive at the Pearl Street Bridge at 7:30 as the celebration gets into full swing. There will be music, food trucks, and cash bars, all building up to back-to-back visual displays designed for ultimate wow factor.
 
At 8:45 p.m., we’ll unveil “something big”—a surprise, world-class spectacle making its U.S. premier. And at 9:00, an enormous fireworks show will light up the bridge, the Grand River, and all of downtown.

Art For Honor provides veterans with a platform to share their experiences through art and storytelling. By showcasing the creativity and stories of veterans, Art for Honor seeks to promote dialogue, empathy, and appreciation within the community.

We will be hosting 5 Art Prize Artists at our Open House event on Saturday, September 14. Enjoy refreshments while you chat with the artists. Artist Laura Songer will be offering a free drawing class for kids at 10 am and a drawing class for adults at 11 am. Try to create the art you see or create your own design.

Laura Songer & Matthew Songer will also be offering free classes for individuals ages 60+ on Monday, September 16 from 1 pm - 2 pm. Laura will teach drawing and Matthew will teach photography.

After the enormous success of last year, Merchants and Makers—the growing West Michigan collective of creatives and small businesses—is once again teaming up with ArtPrize to bring its Makers Market filled with handmade goods to this year’s event. And this year, it’ll take place over three weekends!
 
Over 100 vendors will sell their inspired, unique, and stylish wares in an outdoor marketplace each week. All of this handmade goodness, along with food trucks and live musical performances, make this a relaxing and celebratory gathering for everyone.

Treetops Collective is hosting a block party and community mural-painting in the parking lot outside their newly renovated building at 906 Division Ave S. Contribute to the interactive mural and enjoy music, food, and shopping from local vendors on September 14th from 12-4 pm. (Rain date is September 21).

The Treetops Block Party is entitled “Building Belonging Through Community Art.” It will include a live painting from a mural artist who will create a mural representing Treetops Collective’s work and community. A portion of the mural will be a “paint-by-number” and open to community members to contribute to.

The block party and mural will contribute to Treetops Collective’s mission of supporting a connected community in which New American neighbors have opportunities to flourish and find true belonging.

Browse the galleries of these unique artists as they showcase unique and captivating pieces that you could add to your collection.  

Each artist will have their own tents/tables for display. Individual sales will be down directly with the artists. 



During this time, take advantage of walking through the hosting venue, built in 1904 - an architectural beauty. It houses the ArtPrize entries for the 35 artists with more than 100 pieces of art.

Chairs Off the Pedestal is a Time Based entry which, in addition to evenings at Vicinity Energy on Ottawa St, will be moving and sitting around the ArtPrize district during the day.

Mellow Pines is a Grand Rapids based Audio, Aroma, and Creative Therapy Lounge/Photo ClubHouse created by artists for artist's. In other words, we're the perfect group of people you want to speak to artist's to reach understanding, common ground, and the perfect place for security, safety, and artist acceptance. Our aim is to host the lounge daily with DJs, live art, cookouts, and workshops of all kinds while providing visiting artist's a more natural way to network and get to know the city, and vice versa for local artist's.

Meet The Goldenrod Girls 

This artistic presentation delves into the challenges faced by women across diverse cultures, with a powerful emphasis on the pervasive issue of harassment and domestic violence. "Breaking Rank" is an exploration that dares to shatter boundaries of internalized shame, and embarrassment, and ignite tough conversations about the experiences of women worldwide, across all cultures. We strive to illuminate the strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit of women who have endured difficulties simply by being by female, from impossibly unattainable standards, to the darkness of domestic violence. 

Our choreography, infused with creative innovation and heart-wrenching emotion, aims to reveal the untold stories and unheard struggles of these women. By embracing and bringing awareness to these narratives, we seek to create a safe space where more voices can be heard, hidden pain can be acknowledged, evil can be brought to light, and resilience of women can be celebrated. We want to also acknowledge the ongoing oppression and identity struggle of all human beings. Though this specific performances storyline follows a female focused perspective, we would be conscience-stricken if we did not acknowledge the truth that there are also many men that have faced these challenges and have had to rise from darkness in their lives.

This groundbreaking performance will challenge societal norms that perpetuate silence and it will hopefully empower those enduring to rise above their circumstances. It serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit, the transformative power of art and the importance of spreading God’s love. "Breaking Rank" beckons audiences to stand in solidarity with women who have experienced these things. (All of Us) Together, let us MOVE towards a society that upholds the rights and dignity of every woman and person equally, where compassion, respect and are the guiding principles. 

“Breaking rank”: Full Performance - In a military formation, soldiers stand in a line or formation called ranks. "Breaking ranks" refers to an individual soldier or a group of soldiers deviating from the prescribed formation by stepping out of line or breaking the orderly arrangement.

Jacklyn Brickman, Assistant Professor of Kinetic Imaging, Kevin Abbott, Director of VITAL, and Kelsey Paschich, Assistant Professor of Innovation in Dance at Western Michigan University will be performing Frozen Fields: Unexpected Growth as a part of ArtPrize on Saturday, September 14th at 6pm at WMU Grand Rapids (200 Ionia Ave SW) in the AMP Lab.

The Department of Planetary Futures Frozen Fields: Unexpected Growth is a multimedia live performance and report from the Cryo Speculation Laboratory at The Department of Planetary Futures. FF:UG meditates on time, space, and the preservation of life through live physical and digital visuals that approach the overarching topic of absurdity in eco-art through sound, experimental animation, bodily movement, and realtime performance. Agents traverse the laboratory amongst layers of time, former, and future selves to process and preserve grass via methods of dissection, archivation, and cryopreservation. Projected ghostly figures echo the motions of live dancers to present alternate existences through layered dimensions. A rumination on fragility, metamorphosis, and humankind in the face of a shifting world, the layered choreography, visuals, and sound design explore liquified, frozen, and compressed possibilities for the future - livable or not. FF:UG ponders humanity’s place in time and space, bodies in motion, and the evolving dimensions of future selves, in a cryptic celebration of the unexpected resilience of living things.

Family Workshop 2: "Cultural Patterns Tile"

Join us to create art inspired by the beautiful patterns found in various cultures. This workshop allows participants to decorate tiles using designs that reflect different cultural histories and significance.

Stitching for SARAtonin

Consumers Energy's SmartArt competition blends art with sustainability and environmental stewardship. The competition exemplifies the kind of creativity Consumers Energy and Michigan will need to deliver on our state's clean energy transformation. For the eleventh consecutive year, Grand Rapids Public Schools’ high school students created artwork embodying the themes of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainability.

Chairs Off the Pedestal is a Time Based entry which, in addition to evenings at Vicinity Energy on Ottawa St, will be moving and sitting around the ArtPrize district during the day.

Keep an eye out for a sit(e) of seats for sharing space, rest, conversation, questions, stories, chess, knitting and just hanging out.
